Class of Five was founded by Dan Makin, who came to Taiwan in 2014 to start a career as an English teacher. In search of improving his teaching skills, he went to different cram schools to find one that would equip him with the knowledge to become a better teacher. What he found was that while many cram schools had their own versions of what the best standard of English education was, none of these standards were measured against an outside rubric. How could anyone be sure exactly how well their students were doing compared to another cram school, or against the standards needed for college application? Many students decide to take their IELTS or GEPT later in life, but what if that journey started now? And so with the assistance of Cambridge's Qualifications for Young Learners, he developed a curriculum that would give the youngest students the strongest starts.
Coming across the Cambridge Young Learners program provided the framework to create a curriculum that had clear progression against an international scale. And better yet, it was targeted specifically at young learners and had an emphasis of being fun and engaging for that age group. With a target to reach for, the question remained how do we get there? The curriculum he designed was to put the student first. His experience taught him that students disengage if they don't find something interesting, and if they do something for too long. So rather than resist these features of young learners, he decided to lean into them instead. He knew that kids can grow tired of games quickly, so he designed over a hundred games to cycle through. He knew that students don't like to do one thing for too long, so he segmented his class into four 20 minutes time slots each with their own theme. He was able to maximize the amount of individual practice within a time slot, whilst giving students a month to study, practice and perfect each theme. The combination of fun, engaged, repetitive practice over the duration of a month proved to be highly effective, and he noticed the ability of his classes skyrocket.
Having simplified the classroom to student flashcards, personal whiteboards and a few other game pieces, Class of Five is able to send a teacher fully equipped with all materials needed to any location. This has two benefits - it means that we can reach any student anywhere, and it helps keep the cost of the service affordable. What we offer the student is a fun way to learn and use English which will give them confidence and give them the best possible start to their English journey. What we offer the parent is a reliable, affordable class that demonstrates its quality in the proficiency exams we send our students to at the end of every level.
