No, Class of Five is an in-person class delivered to your door, or any location that you want.
The best way is to book a free trial with us. The trial is three days long so you can witness the game-spaced learning method take effect, and on the last class you can enroll with the teacher.
Ensure the other participants are available for class, since this is the pod your child will be working with for the duration of the semester. On the third day, contracts will be available for parents to sign. You will agree on a start date for the class, and the rest is up to us!
At the end of the semester we can help arrange a date at a Cambridge testing center where you can get your Cambridge language certificate.
The Game-Spaced Learning Method combines Ebbinghaus' theory of the "forgetting curve" with a game-based style of learning for children. The method was developed by Class of Five founder Dan Makin while teaching young learners from K to grade 6.
Ebbinghaus discovered that we forget an overwhelming majority of what we learn, unless we review it at certain key moments - immediately after class, the day after class, three days later, a week later, a month later etc. Review of material can be boring for young learners, however, and so this is why all our teaching and review methods are game-based, so that it's easy for students to pay attention.
Research has shown that small classes yield much better achievement results for students. Children get more attention, more participation in class, and better interactions with the teacher and other students.
Usually the price of such classes is reflected in the tuition cost, but Class of Five has worked hard to make the price competitive with cram schools which have much larger class sizes.
It's easy for a student to get lost in a class of 20, but with Class of Five there's simply no room to shy away from learning and participating.
One of the most exciting features about Class of Five is that you can custom-build your own classes. This way, you can guarantee who your child's classmates will be and benefit from a community-driven class.
For any parents that need help bolstering numbers to make the requisite five students, we can log your details on a waiting list and schedule a trial class with other students in your area. All parents will be asked to join a group-chat on Line, and everyone will have to agree on a location for class. Then a three-day trial class can begin. On the third day, we would require all parents to be present to agree on a location and to sign contracts.
Our teachers utilize a variety of materials to teach, with student flashcards and dry-erase whiteboards being the primary tools. Each student receives their own set of cards and a whiteboard, which are sufficient for teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The whiteboards are designed to hold inserts, allowing students to annotate reading segments, make notes, trace letters, write answers and play games, after which everything can be easily erased and started over fresh. This tool helps focus student attention on one relevant aspect at a time, preventing them from feeling overwhelmed by texts, pictures, and questions. This approach enables us to pinpoint areas where each student struggles and adjust our teaching accordingly.
The materials are retained by the teacher, so that students don't have to worry about being prepared for class - they just need to attend! Parents receive a full syllabus to stay informed about the contents of each lesson.
Class of Five ensures there are no hidden fees by maintaining complete transparency in our pricing. From the start, we provide a detailed breakdown of all costs associated with our courses, including materials and any additional services. We clearly communicate all fees upfront, so you know exactly what you're paying for. Our commitment is to honest and straightforward pricing, ensuring you never encounter unexpected charges. We're so confident about our pricing that we make the information available on our website.
The typical semester at Class of Five spans 20 weeks, introducing a new theme each week. Each theme is taught, discussed, and reviewed for at least four weeks before it's rotated out of daily activities. To ensure retention, previously covered themes are revisited five weeks later.
In total, there are 15 themes, with the final five weeks dedicated to skill mastery. During these weeks, students become familiar with the Cambridge tests and have the opportunity to review any challenging topics. Weeks 1-15 emphasize speaking and listening, while weeks 16-20 focus on reading and writing. This approach ensures that students can easily learn to read and write words and sentences they have already practiced extensively through speaking and listening.
During the skill mastery period, we emphasize reading and writing skills. Much like learning our first language as children, we aim for students to build an extensive vocabulary through speaking and listening before focusing on reading and writing. This way, students become comfortable with words and sentences, making the transition to reading and writing seamless, as they are already familiar with the vocabulary.
This period also includes familiarizing students with the Cambridge exams—how they operate and what to expect. Our goal is not just to teach students how to pass a test, but to make them comfortable with the exam setting and understand what is expected of them. This helps ensure that nervousness doesn't affect their performance, allowing their true English abilities to shine through.
All of our teachers have had at least two years of classroom teaching experience and have English proficiency qualifications to demonstrate that they have achieved a C1 ability in English or higher.
The daily class is segmented into four time periods, each dedicated to a different theme. Starting in week 9, we add a fifth time period specifically for reviewing material from a month ago. During this review period, students are quizzed on all vocabulary and Q&A. If a student answers any part of the quiz incorrectly, they will be retested during the review period of the next class day. This process continues until the student achieves a perfect score.
The only official test is administered by an official Cambridge test center after the semester has ended. We're so confident in our process, that this is the only test we believe they need. Then you will be furnished with a certificate from Cambridge - an endorsement from them demonstrating your child's capabilities in English.
Quizzes are quick and efficient, taking just a few minutes with the help of flashcards. Student performance is tracked using a sticker book—students earn a sticker for each correct answer. This visual system allows both teachers and students to easily identify what needs to be reviewed. For example, while one student might achieve 100% on their first quiz, another may still need additional quizzes to get all words, questions and answers perfect. During these times, we leverage group learning, where students who have mastered the material can assist those who are still working towards it. Since all our activities are game-based, students who have completed their quizzes are always engaged and never left with nothing to do.
We offer three payment packages: 5-day, 4-day, and 3-day. A 3-day week is the minimum we provide, as a 2-day week does not offer sufficient practice and disrupts Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve. Each semester costs NT$60,000, plus NT$2,000 for the Cambridge test. However, the length of the semesters varies: 20 weeks for the 5-day package, 25 weeks for the 4-day package, and 34 weeks for the 3-day package. This structure ensures ample practice with the material while allowing payments to be spread out over a longer period for the packages with fewer days per week.
The most efficient and effective package for student learning is our 5-day week package.
Every package offers the same number of classes, but the packages with fewer days are stretched out to cover a longer period of time to ensure that students get enough practice time with the material. The most important thing to consider for scheduling is that material aligns with the Ebbinghaus forgetfulness curve, so that new material is always taught on a day where a follow-up class is scheduled.
Under no circumstances can a student join a new class mid-semester, as our courses are meticulously designed with each week being crucial to the learning process. However, we offer flexible start dates, so you can begin a new semester right from week 1 with a fresh class of five students. This ensures you receive the full benefit of our structured curriculum from the very beginning.
Unfortunately, we do not offer make-up classes for individual absences. However, each new theme is taught, practiced, and reviewed over 19 additional days, plus there’s a review period a month later. This ensures that missing a day or two does not critically impact the overall learning process.
Rescheduling is only possible if the entire class needs to adjust the schedule. In such cases, it must be coordinated with the other students, their parents, and the teacher to ensure everyone’s availability.
Additionally, our terms and conditions include a "No Refund After Start" policy. This means that once the semester begins, clients are required to pay the full semester fee.
The Game-Spaced Learning Method was designed to address this very challenge: ensuring a fair and effective curriculum for all students, regardless of their learning pace. By presenting material through engaging games, we keep high-achievers motivated and involved, preventing boredom even as they master the content. Additionally, our approach allows ample practice time for students who need extra help. Each theme is taught and reviewed for an entire month, ensuring that every student, regardless of their progress rate, receives sufficient practice and reinforcement of the material. This balanced approach ensures that all students have the support they need to succeed.
Every teacher we deploy is equipped with a comprehensive kit that includes: 6 sets of flashcards, 6 whiteboards with erasers and markers, 12 cups, 20 dice, 7 packs of stickers, game counters, colored pencils, 3 sand timers, play money, and a sticker book to track student progress. This diverse array of equipment supports over 100 games and activities, ensuring that students remain engaged and entertained while participating in learning activities specifically designed to enhance their English skills.
In addition to the comprehensive kit, each teacher is also provided with electronic devices for displaying video content. This ensures that students can benefit from multimedia resources and interactive lessons, further enriching their English learning experience.
Classes are charged at NT$2,000 per hour. With five students, the cost per student drops to NT$400 per hour. While it's possible to arrange a class for a single student, we generally do not recommend it. Our games and activities are designed to be most effective in a group setting, allowing students to benefit from peer learning and the social dynamics that our classes provide.
Fewer students does not necessarily mean a better quality experience in this case. For those interested in starting their English journey with Cambridge, their website offers a comprehensive syllabus detailing all the words and grammar required at each level. This resource can help you understand what to expect and how to prepare. We would recommend utilizing a one-to-one tutoring service and ask them to use this as a guideline.
Studying isn’t all fun and games—except at Class of Five, where it absolutely is! While traditional expectations might include sitting up straight, writing neatly, and completing work quietly, we embrace your child's playful side and use it to teach English. Every game and activity we employ requires active participation, ensuring that each child is speaking, listening, and engaging with our content.
Unlike many cram schools that simply provide a list of words and grammar for teachers to cover, we supply both the content and the method. Our teachers use only sanctioned games and activities proven to maximize student participation and engagement, making learning both effective and enjoyable.
